NEAR Protocol's brand guidelines have a page called "Nearkats". It says they "exist to guide our audience through the complexities of blockchain while adding a bit of fun along the way". The lore on that page: meerkats are small burrowing animals that live in large underground networks, and the much rarer Nearkats "live in large P2P networks where they work tirelessly to facilitate faster throughput, fix vulnerabilities and improve scalability". They scour the network for bugs to devour. They are "native Interwebians".
